Student Visa for Germany

We explain the visa process after admission: requirements, proof of funding, documents and the next steps before travelling to Germany.

Who Needs a Student Visa?

Citizens arriving from countries outside the EU/EFTA generally need a national visa in the appropriate category for long-term study in Germany.

Citizens of Kazakhstan generally need a national visa in the appropriate category for long-term study in Germany.

Main Requirements

Admission

You need confirmation of admission to a public or state-recognised higher education institution, or you must meet the conditions for the relevant study category.

Funding

One way to prove sufficient funding is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with at least €11,904 for 2026.

This amount applies to 2026 and may change.

Other accepted options may include:

  • a formal declaration of financial commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)

Language Skills

If your chosen programme requires proof of language proficiency, the relevant documents may also be required for the visa application. Many programmes require approximately B2 or above, but the exact requirement is determined by the programme and the visa authority.

Health Insurance

You need suitable health insurance. The specific requirements depend on the stage of entry and your student status.
