Vocational Training Visa for Germany

We explain the visa requirements for vocational training in Germany, from securing a training place and meeting language requirements to providing proof of funding.

What Is Usually Required?

Training Place (Ausbildungsplatz)

You need to provide confirmation of a specific vocational training place in Germany. Depending on the profession, training may be company-based (betriebliche Ausbildung) or school-based (schulische Ausbildung).

German Language Skills

Qualified vocational training generally requires German at approximately B1 level, unless your language skills have been confirmed by the employer or educational institution, or another permitted basis applies.

Funding

Company-Based Vocational Training

If your training allowance is at least €1,048 gross or €822 net per month in 2026, your living expenses are generally considered covered.

These amounts apply to 2026 and may change.

If your allowance is below the required level, under certain conditions you can demonstrate funding for the shortfall through, for example:

  • a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
  • a formal declaration of financial commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)
  • other officially accepted forms of proof

School-Based Vocational Training

For school-based vocational training in 2026, you need to demonstrate that you have at least €959 net available per month, for example through:

  • a blocked account (Sperrkonto)
  • a formal declaration of financial commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)
  • a suitable scholarship

These amounts apply to 2026 and may change.

Additional Employment

A residence title for vocational training permits additional employment of up to 20 hours per week, provided that it is separate from the vocational training itself.

After Completing Vocational Training

After successfully completing qualified vocational training in Germany, you may be eligible for a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for qualified employment, subject to meeting the applicable conditions.

Completing vocational training in Germany and subsequently working in qualified employment may open a pathway to a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), provided that the statutory conditions are met.

This is a possibility subject to conditions, not a guarantee.
